What do you believe is the purpose of a college education?

I believe that the purpose of a college education is different for each person. However, for me personally, the purpose of a college education is to discover new things and to open my own mind. Getting a college education means to me more opportunities in life after college as well because with a college degree I can be certified to be a teacher which is what I have always wanted to be. Along the way a college degree has helped me make many new lifelong friends and has definitely changed my word a bit. Getting a college degree also gives me a sense of accomplishment because I feel as though with a college degree I can accomplish many things in the future. It is something that is very important to me that is long lasting and will help me grow into the adult that I am going to be.

What does it mean to be educated?
To me to be educated it means to have knowledge about all sorts of things. I do not believe that being educated strictly means to be "book smart", because some people are smart in all sorts of areas. To be educated is to learn more about the world around you and to be able to comprehend things that you could not before. That is why in college you not only take classes geared towards your major but also general education classes as well to expanse your knowledge. You do not only get educated in college but also from the people around you. In college you get to meet so many different people and I truly believe that you learn more than you think when it comes to being educated.

What experiences have you had with education that led you to this belief?

I have had many experiences with education that have led me to this belief. There was one teacher that I had in second grade who I believe first truly inspired me to become a teacher. She had a very gentle, fun way about her and I earned more from her than I even realized at that time. Also, in high school I learned a lot from the friendships that I made. My world was very small before high school because I had gone to grade school with the same kids my whole life. When I met friends from different areas in high school I learned more about people than I ever thought possible. I broadened my knowledge about what it meant to be educated very much. Especially now that I am here at college, it is the same way here but even more so. In college I have met people from all over and it's fascinating to find out how different people can be when they're only even in a different section of Pennsylvania.
